Youth Cooking Classes

Our kids’ cooking classes are designed to spark creativity and confidence in the kitchen for two age groups, 6–10 and 10–14 year olds. Young chefs learn essential culinary skills through hands-on activities, from measuring and mixing to tasting and refining flavors. Each class highlights fresh ingredients, teamwork, and safe kitchen practices, all while keeping things fun and approachable. Best of all, students leave each session proudly carrying home the delicious dishes they’ve made, ready to share with family.

*This pilot program will help determine the number of future classes offered during late winter and spring.*

6-10 Year Old Cooking Classes

6–10 year olds will dive into fun, hands-on kitchen activities designed to build confidence and creativity. Kids will learn basic cooking skills such as measuring, mixing, chopping fresh ingredients, safely using simple tools. Each session features a kid-friendly recipe (or two) — like mini pizzas, rainbow veggie wraps, fruit and yogurt salads, hearty soups, homemade bread and  baked treats—that teaches them about flavor, nutrition, and working together as a team. Along the way, they’ll explore new foods, pick vegetables from our garden, practice following instructions, and enjoy tasting their own creations. The class is upbeat, collaborative, and focused on helping young chefs discover the joy of cooking in a safe, supportive and professional-like environment.

10-14 Year Old Cooking Classes

Students take on more advanced and exciting culinary challenges while building real kitchen independence in the cooking class for 10-14 year olds. They’ll learn essential skills like safe knife techniques, sautéing, seasoning, dough-making, and reading full recipes from start to finish. Each class centers on creating a complete dish – such as handmade sauce with pasta, stir-fries, roasted vegetables, baked goods, or cultural recipes from around the world – encouraging them to experiment with flavors and think like young chefs. Along the way, they’ll explore kitchen science, practice teamwork, and gain confidence in planning, preparing, and presenting their food. The class empowers young chefs to take pride in their cooking while having fun and discovering new tastes.

Mary Hunter Rohan

Lead Culinary Instructor

Mary Hunter is a passionate cooking instructor whose culinary journey has been shaped by adventure, community, and a deep love of nourishing others. She began her career feeding hungry trail crews in the remote backcountry of California’s national parks, where she mastered the art of creating hearty, flavorful meals with limited resources and boundless creativity. From campfire breakfasts at dawn to restorative dinners after long days of trail work, Mary Hunter learned how food can bring people together even in the most rugged environments.

Seeking to expand her skills and explore global flavors, Mary Hunter traveled to Thailand for an intensive 10-day cooking course, immersing herself in regional techniques, ingredients, and traditions. The experience sharpened her craft and deepened her appreciation for the cultural stories behind each dish.

Today, Mary Hunter brings that same spirit of exploration and warmth into her cooking classes. She teaches with a blend of practicality and joy, encouraging students to be curious, confident, and unafraid to experiment. Whether in a classroom, a kitchen, or the great outdoors, MH’s approach is grounded in the belief that good food is an adventure worth sharing.
